The eucalyptus is an ever-green tree that is native to Australia but has been naturalized to California and Mediterranean countries. Its leathery blue-green leaves are full of glands containing a fragrant, volatile oil.
Eucalyptus has become well known in Europe as the Australian fever-tree. American physicians used eucalyptus oil to sterilize surgical instruments and incisions, and it has also been used as a steam inhalation for asthma, emphysema, bronchitis, colds, flu, and whooping cough.
