Slippery elm has long been used both medicinally and as a food. The inner bark is high in carbohydrates and antioxidants, with a taste and consistency resembling oatmeal. Slippery elm is also used to manage a variety of ailments and is a major ingredient in the herbal cancer formulation called essiac.
Slippery elm coats the mouth, esophagus and gastrointestinal tract with a soothing residue and is beneficial for conditions such as sore throat, inflammation in the respiratory tract, gastrointestinal ulcers, colitis, diverticulitis, diarrhea, constipation, hemorrhoids and inflammatory bowel disease. Slippery elm also facilitates digestion and helps to cleanse the colon. Other uses include treating inflammation of the bladder and urinary tract. Some people use slippery elm to treat tapeworm infections.
